– weaken the privacy of mentally ill people and strip us of our HIPAA rights. it explicitly allows doctors to “disclose the protected health information of a patient with a mental illness” to family members in situations where “the patient does not consent and the patient is not incapacitated or in an emergency circumstance”. of course, adults should have a right to privacy even if their parents are great, but keep in mind that this will result in people’s private medical information being disclosed to their abusive family members. that’s scary.

–  require states to pass laws allowing “Assisted Outpatient Treatment” (also called “Assertive Community Treatment”) to get mental health grants. that sounds good- I mean, “assist” means “help”- but in this case “assisted” means “forced”. “Assisted Outpatient Treatment” allows people to be forced to take meds and accept other forms of treatment even when they are not deemed a danger to themselves or others. I have been forced to take medication that damaged my physical and mental health by doctors who wouldn’t listen to me. so have many other people I know. this is terrifying. 

I am scared. my friends are scared. a bunch of people are saying they will be too scared to try and access mental health services if this passes. this has already passed the house, and if we don’t do anything it will also pass the senate. but there’s good news: this bill has not had a lot of media coverage, which means that your voice really matters.

please contact your senators. email them. more effective, write them. even more effective, call them (info on how to contact them) (info on what to say). spread the word on social media. tell your friends. arrange a calling party. do whatever you can. this is important. we can do this.

How Does Attraction Work?

Are there
resources for asexuals and aromantics that try to explain what sexual and
romantic attraction are like? Or any people who experience either that are
willing to try to explain?

(Warning
for bewildered rambling that may be disrespectful of queer individuals. I think
I don’t understand sexuality on a pretty basic level, so my questions are
probably ignorant and maybe rude.)

Like, I
don’t really understand what makes a person NOT pansexual? Why are you
attracted to one gender and not another? Is it appearance? If it is, why do you
STOP feeling attraction when you find out that someone who looks like the
subset of people you are attracted to isn’t actually part of that subset? Or do
you? Like, if the attractive guy is actually a lady (or non-binary), are you
less attracted suddenly? What if someone is bigender? I mean, they’re the SAME
PERSON?! But do you feel different when they feel a different gender?

And, I’m
really embarrassed to admit this, but I totally thought attraction must be
based on what private parts you preferred having sex with until recently.
Because I can NOT figure out why looking at a person would lead to a desire to
have sex or be romantic with them? I assumed it MUST have something to do with the type of sex you were hard-wired to enjoy. I only have an aesthetic appreciation for
people (with isn’t really based on their gender, I often think that someone
looks cool in a similar way to a building that I really like, or a mountain). And I slightly
prefer the idea of sex if the other person has a penis? It seems less icky??
But how are sex and gender and appearance and everything related?

I realize
that sexual identity isn’t related to the privates of the person someone is
attracted to now. I’m just not sure what it IS related to.

What makes
someone attractive? What makes someone not? I get that some people are more
attractive than other people. But if someone is physically attractive to you,
why does it matter what their gender is? Why do so many people’s pool of sexually
and/or romantically attractive people restricted to one gender?

my favorite side effect warning is for antidepressants

pros: you won’t want to kill yourself

cons: you might want to kill yourself

Back when I was in a psychiatric hospital, and was offered antidepressants, my mother had declined them due to that apparent side effect. So the staff actually explained about this effect antidepressants have, that give reason to that warning.
When first taking antidepressants they raise up your energy first. So that you have the energy to do the tasks you might have avoided doing due to your depression.
Because of this those who were already suicidal, now have the energy to go do so. Which is the ones this warning is given for.
It’s not that a side effect of antidepressants magically makes you want to kill yourself, it’s the energy it gives those who were already struggling with suicidal issues, to actually attempt the act.

My high school choir/psych teacher actually told is about this. She also said if you have a suicidal friend who starts seeming like they might be getting better because they have more energy, that’s the time to be cautious because that’s when they may still be suicidal but they’ll actually have the energy to go through with it

THIS. a thousand times THIS. I had it explained to me in my AP psychology class in high school. super fucking important.

Of course, they can also cause HALLUCINATIONS and a COMPULSION to kill yourself that you never had before. And your husband has to race home and drive you to the doctor while your aunt frantically finds someone to watch your kids (after she just spend 30 minutes on the phone convincing you that phoning your husband is a better idea than finding another knife since the one you decided to use was missing).

Which is another reason family and friends are supposed to watch you so closely when you try new medication.

I don’t want anyone thinking that if you aren’t suicidal, then you don’t have to worry. 

Antidepressants change the hormone levels in your brain. Researchers only have educated guesses as to what they’re doing and why. Slightly different meds can have hugely different results on the same person. BE CAREFUL.

okay, time to get real here. i know a lot of people have been on an archive of our own before, i know a lot of people write and post to an archive of our own, so i know it’s not a matter of nobody knowing what i’m talking about. i’m going to introduce to you a novel concept tho

ship tag etiquette: 

1. don’t tag in your secondary and minor ships. if your main ship in the fic is loki x hawkeye, awesome; tag that, and anyone looking for loki x hawkeye will basically know your fic is the place to go. if your main ship in the fic is loki x hawkeye, but you also tag the 4 other ships you mention in like one sentence out of the 50k fic you just wrote, then there are going to be a lot of people out there coming to your fic thinking oh hey, at last a thor x sif fanfic sign me up only to find out fast they’re wrong.

2. don’t tag in your

secondary and

minor ships. it doesn’t matter if you dedicate those motherfucking sideships one paragraph out of 53, that’s like promising starving fic readers a treat and giving them a fucking pea. one pea. just one. maybe they are looking for fics with the actual ship whose tag they’re searching in, rather than: 

  • fics where their ship is used as a stepping stone to get to the main one
  • fics where their ship is tagged in because the writer thinks one mention makes it a ‘minor ship’ (IT DOESN’T, it’s just A MENTION OF IT)
  • fics where their ship is only tacked on to keep those characters busy and the main character of your fic only thinks about that ship in passing twice
  • fics where their ship is brought apart, by death or break up or infidelity, in any part of the fic just for the sake of the main ship to happen.

3. don’t tag in your

secondary and

minor ships. it’s just fucking rude. if i wanna get my rocks off reading superhot natasha romanoff x lady sif porn, do you know what i can find by going to their ship tag? DISAPPOINTMENT. because rather than learning that there are three/four fics focusing on their spacewives sex life, i have to sift through the mILLIONTY ONE HUNDRED fics already there, who center around loki. if i wanted to read about loki I’D JUST OPEN THE GODDAMN MCU TAG, IT’S ALL PEOPLE EVER WRITE ABOUT ANYWAY. 

4. don’t tag in your

secondary and

minor ships. i don’t care if you’ve done it once or twice, i don’t care if you think it’s necessary. it’s not. if you think it’s necessary, you know what you could do? add a note at the beginning. a OH BY THE WAY GUYS THISFIC WILL ALSO INCLUDE SOME SIDE SHIPS SUCH AS […] or you can let the readers figure it out. 

5. don’t tag in your

secondary and

minor ships. because those of us who go into those tags looking for fics about them where they’re appreciated and portrayed well and are the main focus will be left facing the origin of our supervillain story. every. single. day. 

6. if you’ve tagged in

secondary and

your minor ships: do us all and yourself a favour and go delete them. do it now. edit them now. you’ll be thanked, and most importantly, you’ll be appreciated twice: once by you readers, once by the people who don’t have to get annoyed anymore at seeing fics promising them an apple and giving them a fucking pea. 

PLEASE include at least a note at the beginning! I get where OP is coming from, but PLEASE INCLUDE AT LEAST A NOTE WITH MINOR SHIPS.

This tired asexual begs you – almost everything is a NoTP for me, and the more warnings I get for who is going to be giving icky kisses to who, the better.

It must be really frustrating to read something hoping for a plot you really like and only getting a tiny mention. So frustrating. But please don’t go the other way and not tag things that may be squicky for people. Or leave me hoping for elusive FRIENDSHIPS or FAMILY, when you’ve actually neatly paired everyone together.
