Tea and College – Cerusee – Batman (Comics) [Archive of Our Own]

cerusee:

It’s not that Jason doesn’t like Cassandra.  He just can’t figure out how to communicate with her.

Maybe the cookies will help.

I cried a lot about this fic. It’s everything I want from Cass fic. She’s portrayed perfectly. This sweetheart who’s fine with knocking over other people’s tea if she doesn’t like it, who’s blunt and rude and wonderful. Jason is perfect too, interacting with her so differently than anyone else in the family would. The things that are important to him, and that he sees, are so uniquely him!

People writing nonverbal Cass is REALLY important to me. Unrepentantly nonverbal Cass, because she understands people just fine!

I don’t have enough words. I want to keep going. Just, THANK YOU Cerusee. This fic is really special to me. I may need to make a new fic rec list just because of this fic, since this one has absolutely zero Tim.

I really like my new shawl.

(Click pictures for descriptions, and let me know if you’d rather descriptions were in the text.)

I wore it to church and got to have THREE conversations about the International Phonetic Alphabet, where the person was leaning in, looking at the symbols I pronounced. This made me woefully aware of the fact I can’t yet pronounce most palatal or pharyngeal consonants, but was great fun.

Texture is wonderfully slippery, symbols are pretty, and I love the translucency. I might have liked it a bit longer, because I have wide shoulders, but I love it so much, you guys.

Thank you @allthingslinguistic, @lingthusiasm!

@ao3commentoftheday so I was wondering how you and others feel about long chapters, not just stories but chapters because I have a tendency to write chapters over 10,000 words at times. Some people enjoy it but others I’m not so sure about. It’s not intentional, it’s just where my current fandom of writing (persona 5 Kawakami/protag) takes me. It happened when I wrote femshep/Garrus as well. Should I look into splitting chapters or so long as it’s solid, keep with what I’ve been doing?

I personally tend to have an attention span that prefers chapters around 3K or shorter. That said, if I like what I’m reading, I’ll just keep the page open and wander away and come back. Other people I know think a chapter isn’t worthwhile if it’s *under* 3K so… yeah. Different strokes for different folks 🙂

I have trouble with long chapters. Tend to lose my place, and have to start over, which can be frustrating.

But different chapter lengths really change the flow of your fic. And I really enjoy those separate experiences.

  • Teland ( @teland writes some of the longest chapters I’ve ever read in fanfic. You get really deep into these worlds, rarely coming up for air. Reaching a chapter break leaves you gasping and satisfied. It’s an amazing experience. (Really strong trigger/squick/bdsm warnings here. Te hits pretty much every common squick, and lots of obscure ones. Writing quality is amazing, if you’re okay with skimming ‘nope’ areas.)
  • Ryssabeth ( @jedierenjaeger) writes shorter chapters, and each one is a moment. Even when they directly connect to each other, they feel frozen in place, like you’re outside of time while reading. The chapter breaks are necessary to keep you tethered to the real world. Frozen, crystalized poetry. (Only real warning is fic is usually shippy, and sometimes deals with past abuse.)
  • Heartslogos ( @heartslogos) also has mid-length chapters, but hers are punchy. They’re all about movement, and you’re pulled through them. The longest chapters leave me winded, barely able to reach the end. The shortest ones leave me riding high, with energy that I need to burn by DOING something. (Warnings for lots of shipping, and a few have darker themes.)
  • Hauntedlittledoll ( @hauntedlittledoll) writes a variety of lengths, some of them quite short. Her short chapters are bouncy and fun. The longer ones are more immersive. All are ethereal. (Warnings for angst, and allusions to dark stuff.)

I need more examples of short chaptered work! I tend to enjoy it, but I don’t always follow the author.

My sweet spot is 1000-3000 words per chapter, but that might completely ruin Te’s stories, cut them into bits. It’s too long for other authours and/or stories. I think the important thing is choosing the point where the story has breathing spot. That makes the break satisfying.

Hi! I’ve been following a lot of the tagging discussions lately, and tagging has been something that always worries me, I’m always scared I do it wrong, and I do enjoy reading the tags. I do like angst so I tend to look for those more, and I do have a number of things, like most readers I imagine, I won’t read, so look for the tag to avoid those (mainly anti x charter fics. If I do see that tagged on someone I like I’ll avoid it, I don’t wanna read hate about my favs. They can write it, I (1/?)

ao3commentoftheday:

just won’t read hate about my favs). I do also have a massive drabble/shorts collection (120+) and never tagged properly on A03 with that, I have angst, fluff and all listed but once I hit 20+ drabbles I found my tagging harder to do so instead in the AN note, I list the warnings, eg Death, Major Violence, Panic Attacks (I do have a main tag that says More Tags In The AN) because I didn’t want to list MCD as a main tag if it happens in 3 or 4 out of 120+ drabbles, and for me, a drabble (2/?)

collection isn’t something that you have to read all the chapters of everything off, you pick and you chose what you like. I’ve read many people who do the same as me, and there’s collections I’ll only read the chapters with stuff I like. Basically, what I’m trying to say is that is there others who do it this way, tag and warn each chapter individually, or do you just do a massive A03 tag list. Hope you have a lovely day. I love your blog! (3/3)

Hi anon, I hope you don’t mind, but I bolded the main thrust of your asks here. There isn’t really a “standard” way of tagging on AO3 (because there are thousands of users). Still, for a situation like this where every chapter of a “fic” is a different story, I think tagging with the main things like pairings and genres etc in the tags with the “additional info in the Author’s Note” is a good way to go. Then you can use the AN at the top of the chapter to list that particular drabble’s specific tags.

What do the rest of you think?

I don’t actually read drabble collections. If there’s more than 5 unrelated stories combined together, it’s too much for me. I’d rather have 100 pages of your archive to wander through.

But I’d think individual chapter warning are probably the most helpful. Maybe add the major triggers to the tag list? Like, you should probably always add ‘rape’ or ‘non con’.

So, been thinking about this. I write a lot of medical melodrama, some of it set in the future, and the rest set in California, oddly enough. I have, several times now, obliquely referenced medical marijuana, in one case CBD, in one case THC, being used in specific medical contexts that make sense given current research. I generally use slightly vague terminology as a plausible deniability screen, but I’m wondering if I should tag for drug use.

ao3commentoftheday:

Interesting question. With marijuana becoming legalized in more places (and with future fic) that does sort of change the idea of it from illicit substance to something more acceptable. Still, given the large percentage of the world where it is still illegal it might be a good idea.

I can’t say I’ve written about it before so I’ll open this one up to the blog. What do you guys think?

I have3 a friend who struggles with drug addiction. She prefers all mentions of drugs to be tagged. Even prescription drugs. If you’re willing, it might be helpful to some people for you to always tag, and then include the type of drugs.

Ex (using how I’d tag on Tumblr, I’m not sure of the ao3 tags):

  • “drugs,” and “medical marijuana”
  • “drugs,“ and “prescription drugs“
  • “drugs,“ and “drug abuse“ (if it’s street drugs)

Okay but like, Bird themed head scarves or maybe those huge flower pins for a niqabi! My sister and I love using those huge pins when wearing pastels and beige clothing and sweet butterfly layered niqab, perfect combination 💐🌹💐🌹

abimee:

this has to be my favorite suggestion cause i absolutely LOVE anything bird-themed ( im a huge ornithology person aaa) or flower-related, so here’s some niqabis hanging out w/ their pet cockatiel !!

Hi!!! So I’m white and I’m just wondering if it’s ok for me to draw muslims/ppl with hijabs??? I really don’t want to offend anyone ;0; thank you! (Also your art is so cute!! I honestly love it so much ❤️💛💚💙💜🖤❣️💕

abimee:

OK so here’s the thing; you need to understand Islam before you draw hijabis!

If you wanna draw hijabis, you should first do your research on Islam and the Hijab, and all the different types of hijab we wear ( niqab, burka, jilbab, hijab, khimar, etc)! Not doing your research in Islam before you make muslim characters can lead to incorrect representations or the character.

Secondly; Hijab isn’t just a scarf we throw on and go out into the world in, ‘’hijab’’ is technically a form of modesty a lot of us follow! So there’s a lot more to it, like;

  • In hijab, we can only show our face, hands, and feet ( though some people have begun showing their forearms as well, so thats an option too)!
  • We’re often told to wear loose clothings when observing Hijab, but some people don’t do that, so it all depends.
  • Some hijabis also cover up more, like their mouth/face or hands entirely. Some even cover their entire body up!
  • Hijab is observed by both men and women, but THE hijab ( the headscarf) is worn by women in public.
  • Women do not have to wear the hijab around other women or their family.
  • There’s a male counterpart called a Taqiyah!

You CAN draw muslim/hijabi characters if you want, but I ask that you do your research beforehand !! there’s so many bad representations of us out there ( i once saw a character in hijab with her tits out once and god that still haunts me), because Hijab is actually a big concept with a ton of information about it, it’s not just wearing a scarf !

( Also side tip; there’s muslims of all ethnicities! There’s white muslims and Thai muslims and Black muslims, you can find Islam all around the world, so if you do make muslim characters, try to keep in mind that we’re all diverse and different!)

Sorry to jump on your post, but this has made me curious about something (feel free to ignore me)

Would it be disrespectful to depict a [fictional] character who usually wears a hijab not wearing one if she’s only with her family or other women? In the context of the fictional world she wouldn’t be doing anything improper, but the reader/viewer would be seeing her without her hijab on, so would it make readers/viewers who observe Hijab irl uncomfortable?

To be honest with you, I think it would depend!

I know some people might be uncomfortable with a non-muslim making this depiction, while some are comfortable with it. I personally have no opinion on it and say that if it’s in a situation where they don’t have to wear hijab it’s fine to do it, as long as you’re mindful of it as a non-muslim.

I think as long as you’re being respectful and mindful of what you’re doing, and that you realize that some people might not be comfortable with it (and that’s valid criticism, especially if you’re not muslim), then you could do it! Just be careful and be critical of why you want to do it and how you do it.

Guys, look. They finally made a baby stroller for wheelchair-bound mothers. This is so important.

My wife is a physical therapist.  She started tearing up when I showed this to her.

I love seeing ableist norms broken.

[Images show a stroller that attaches to the front of a wheelchair. It’s raised higher than a stereotypical wheelchair and faces the wheelchair user, allowing them to see their child, as well as get the baby in and out, etc. Visibility to maneuver doesn’t seem to be affected.

End ID.
