the fact that placebos can work even when you know they’re placebos is so fucked up. what the hell is up with the brain

like some kind of fucked up wrinkled goblin that won’t unlock the chemical secrets if you just ask politely, you have to give it some kind of pill. you can tell it that the pill doesn’t do shit, but it doesn’t care, it just wants the pill

A few years ago I had the privilege of proof-reading a dissertation on drug addiction interventions which touched on the placebo effect (because it turns out successful addiction interventions share the basic elements of the placebo effect: a desire to get better, a change in one’s beliefs about one’s condition, and a positive relationship with a trusted authority figure).

How the placebo effect works, in terms of feedback between the brain and (presumably) the inflammatory system, is still unknown.  But the logic of why the placebo effect should happen is not that mysterious.  There are two basic principles.

One, pain is protective.  A lot of the conditions we take medicines for are in fact interim defence mechanisms.  Pain stops us doing things that damage our bodies.  Fever kills pathogens.  Vomiting gets rid of poisons.  Fainting cuts the work-load on the heart.

Two, healing takes resources.  Before the body commits to expending those resources fully it needs to be certain they’re not needed for something else, like fighting off a secondary bacterial infection.  And of course the circumstances in which we get sick in the first place are the same circumstances in which we might want to hold resources in reserve for dealing with further assaults on the body.

This means that our healing systems will stay in the interim condition until they get a signal of some kind to let them know that our circumstances have changed and full healing is a good investment now.  What part of our body processes that kind of complex information?  The brain, that’s what.

The information basically needs to take the form: “Something external has changed and we have confirmation that as a result we are going to recover from this condition.”  Apparently our healing systems can tell when we’re just making it up to jolly them along.

The logic is presumably the same in most species, but in humans, being language-users, that external change can take the form of someone whom we trust to know what they’re talking about saying “These pills will do the trick.  Drop into the pharmacy on your way home and hand them this bit of paper.”

Most likely the signal from the brain takes the form of some kind of hormone, triggered by a new emotional state.

The word for the subjective experience of that emotional state?  Hope.

Now, the important update that drove me to theft.

This is Eldest’s second day taking the morning bus!

He’s now going to school at the same time as the rest of his classmates, AND I’m not driving him. I have a THREE HOUR period this morning, with nothing to do! (Tiny is still here, so I’m not alone, but STILL. The freedom!)

I am so proud of him. He’s started Concerta, and it’s been wonderful to watch him catch himself. Switch tracks when his brain catches up with his body and he realizes that he knows a better option. I spent my entire childhood desperate for that exact ability. He has self control!

Gushing about my son under the cut.

I keep noticing more similarities to my husband. Eldest doesn’t pick up on people’s emotions intuitively, so he’s started memorizing all of Tiny’s reactions. When he sees his little brother acting annoyed, he changes tactics and tries things that Tiny has responded to before. That’s how my husband shows he loves me – he has a mental database of what to do in response to every reaction he’s seen from me. It’s a huge amount of effort. I’m blown away by how much these two guys care about the people around them.

Eldest is starting to read, as well. He can sound words out, has quite a few sight words, and is getting fast enough that he doesn’t need me to reread each sentence so he knows what he’s just read. Very exciting!

Math class is challenging him at school, because writing answers is boring. At home, my grade one student is figuring out that ¾ of 100 is 75; multiplying 3 times 12 to get 36; and understands that to do something like add 400 and 300, you add 4 and 3, get 7, and then add the zeros back on to end up with 700. He can’t always write the correct numbers, but the math comes natural. No wonder math class is boring!

He adores his baby cousin, and all the other babies/toddlers he meets. His gentleness and patience with them astounds me.

Frustrations are becoming easier for him to work through. Even the loss of things he expected!

Some of his jokes are funny! … Or at least close to funny? He’s a seven year old boy – yesterday, Calvin (of Calvin and Hobbes) was talking about snorting snot into your mouth to make your spitballs fly farther and Eldest though it was amazing.

I love my kid, you guys.

Fanfiction: An Economic Review:

The nation of Fanfiction has a unique economic footprint. As areas of employment, agriculture and manufacture are nearly non-existent, suggesting that even processed goods are readily available in the natural environment. This resource generation seems linked to the placement of naturally occurring dwellings, as little construction exists, and transport jobs are minimal. With so much readily available, social progress is a low priority; computing, engineering and science are all far less active than the rates seen in America, and law and social work are similarly diminished.

The prosperity of the environment creates a surplus of leisure time, which many fill with additional education and training. Nearly a third of the population are employed in colleges as professors or full-time academics, while another quarter work as high-school teachers. Entertainment and the arts are prospering, and food retailers – predominantly small, locally owned artisanal coffeeshops – are commonplace. Non-food retail is largely focussed on luxuries such as flowers, books and pets. However, crime rates have risen in line with increased leisure; while criminal activities are not directly measured in this survey, law enforcement employs around 2.5 times as many people per head of the population as the police force in the United States.

Inspired by this post, I completed a survey of AO3 tags, measuring all non-fandom-specific AU tags that implied the existence of real, modern, legal jobs. Click the graphs to see larger versions.

This University of Alberta Indigenous history course is the most popular course in Canada

A course created one year ago by the University of Alberta was the most popular online course in Canada in 2017, and is already making inroads into how Canadians understand the history of Indigenous people.

With almost 20,000 people enrolled, the free online 12-module course called Indigenous Canada teaches those from an Indigenous perspective.

“A lot of Indigenous experiences in Canada have been silenced by a normative settler vision of Canada and the history of it,” said Paul Gareau, assistant professor with the U of A’s Native Studies program and the academic lead for the course.

“This course focuses on telling an Indigenous experience of Canada.”

“The course is available for free through Coursera here.”

I’m not surprised it’s extremely popular: it provides an actual answer/solution to the “okay if my entire lifetime of education about the history of the country lied to me and erased these perspectives, how do I learn the opposite?”

“Go and read up on your own” isn’t really a solution to this, as there is a large amount of bullshit out there, and it’s actually hard to wade through, especially for people without actual training on evaluating historical sources (ie the vast majority of the population).

So a course actually being offered by a Reputable Educational Institution is a huge boon, especially when offered for free. Hat tip to the creators of the course.

Cool!

There seems to be some sort of fairytale Steve-Tony thing going on right now, and may I just recommend that somebody uses the Swan Maiden as a prompt? And that they also read this post first. And then come back and tell me that any MCU character other than Steve “I Will Fight God Barehanded” Rogers would be the swan in this scenario.

Picture this: Tony, young heir to the Stark dynasty, who never satisfies his father’s high expectations and never sees his mother outside of balls and galas. He’d much rather be inventing than glad-handing politicians and society members, but Howard locks him out of the workshop when there’s networking to be done. So instead Tony usually goes out into the Manor grounds, away from the noise and people, where there’s an old, barely-maintained koi pond that’s mostly been taken over by nature. There’s a pair of swans that likes to swim there, and an old bench. Tony sits there sometimes. Usually he’s quiet, but sometimes he talks to the swans, tells them stuff he can’t talk about to people.

Steve and Bucky are swans. Always have been; Bucky’s the ideal of the species except for a wing injury that keeps him from flying long distances, and Steve’s  awkward and small, before he hit a growth spurt and turned into the biggest male anybirdy had ever seen. They spend most of their time together, usually in a small, undisturbed pond mostly ignored by humans. There’s a scrawny young human who comes there sometimes, and he talks. He’s not bad, for a human. They like him well enough, but frankly the food he sometimes brings is more interesting.

Except one day Howard has had enough of Tony’s dodging out of social events, and storms off onto the grounds to find him, Stane trailing behind. He finds Tony at the old pond with the swans, and immediately starts yelling at him. Stane joins in with commentary. Tony gets up from the bench and opens his mouth to respond, and Howard hits him so hard across the face that he falls to the ground.

That was a bad move.

There is a blur of white feathers, honking, and thunderous flapping across the surface of the pond. By the time Howard has turned to see what it is, it’s already turned itself into a six-foot-two shirtless slab of muscle, and Howard goes down with a single punch. Bucky, trailing behind, gets Stane with a second hit.

Tony, on the ground, assumes he has a concussion. Because that is the only explanation for the two enormous men standing in front of him, wrapped in feathery capes and looking like they wish Howard and Stane had put up a better fight.

(Steve and Bucky really would like to punch more things, please, but clearly the injured little guy takes priority.)

….and then they go up to the house and fuss, probably, and Steve and Bucky eat the entire salad course that was supposed to be served to the guests at dinner, and Tony continues to wonder if he’s hallucinating. Howard and Stane eventually wake up and come to the house, only to find that Tony has acquired a pair of bodyguards that won’t let them within ten feet of him. Who keep…hissing?

It’s weird, but Tony’s happy with the arrangement. And Steve’s happy with Tony. And Bucky, longsuffering, puts up with them both (Until he meets Tony’s socialite friend, Natasha, and then there’s a little less suffering involved.)

I’m so proud of you! You almost shipped! (I remain convinced that non-shippers write the best fic, even shippy fic. There is the proper focus on friendship and relationship, and the appropriate lack of icky kissing.)
