Batfamily Fake Deaths, Murders, and Assaults

I’ve notice people saying things like, ‘Cass and Duke are
the only people who haven’t tried to kill Tim,’ or, ‘I guess only Alfred hasn’t
died/’died’ on Tim now.’

These statements are well meaning, but not quite factual.
While Duke DOES seem to be a good kid who hasn’t attempted anything awful,
almost everyone else has. Here’s a handy-dandy list to help you keep track of
all the awfulness characters have done to their family!

Assaults

  • Multiple times, Bruce has been brainwashed and forced to
attack his Robins. In Teen Titans Year One, it was Dick. In Batman/Superman, it
was Tim. I’m sure there have been others. And there have been LOTS of Poison
    Ivy/Scarecrow/Mad Hatter stories!
  • Steph attacked her father and was ready to murder him before
Batman and Robin talked her down. (Her dad may have later tried to kill her, as
    well?)
  • Jason attached a bomb to the Batmobile, ready to murder
    Bruce.
  • When Jason told Bruce he had to either murder the Joker or kill
Jason to stop him, Bruce sliced open Jason’s neck and failed to stop him from
    falling off a building.
  • Jason assaulted Tim at Titans Tower, left him in a pool of
blood, and wrote ‘Jason Todd Was Here’ with said blood on the wall.
  • Cass got drugged and brainwashed by Deathstroke and her dad,
tried to kill Tim. Stayed evil for quite a while.
  • Jason shot at Dick with a gun a lot, while Dick was in
New York. Then turned into a tentacle monster and tried to eat Dick. It wasn’t
very serious, though, this list is just too Tim-centric.
  • Damian stabbed Tim and threw him off the Batcave’s dinosaur,
then dropped Jason’s Robin undies on his face.
  • Jason stabbed Tim through the stomach with a batarang during
    Battle for the Cowl.
  • Jason shot Damian in the spine? Or in some way nearly killed
the tiny Robin. Damian needed special magic science surgery from his mom.
  • Damian cut Tim’s line while they were patrolling. Tim survived
    and beat him up.
  • Bruce attacked Jason and beat him up after Selina canceled
their wedding. I hate comics. (nu52)

Murders

  • Jason’s mom handed Jason over to the Joker. Turned away
while he was getting beaten, but otherwise didn’t care.
  • Lady Shiva forced Cass to agree to a fight to the death in
exchange for helping her daughter rebuild her fighting skills. Shiva killed her
daughter and resurrected her in a Lazarus Pit.
  • Talia cloned Damian, hyper-aged the poor child, and had the
    child kill Damian. (nu52)
  • In the Injustice universe, Damian and Dick had a game where
Damian threw things and Dick caught them. Dick missed once, fell, and somehow
broke his neck on a rock? (AU)

Fake Deaths

  • In the Silver Age, Alfred sacrificed his life to rescue
Batman and Robin. He was secretly saved from death and mutated with radiation,
becoming the evil Outsider. He sent a lot of villains to attack his former
employer, but was eventually discovered and cured.
  • Bruce convinces Alfred to pretend to be from the future, as
part of a horribly messed up 16th birthday present. ‘Future Alfred’
is ‘murdered’ in a video Tim is forced to watch. Tim becomes paranoid about
everyone as he attempts to solve the murder and save Alfred.
  • After Tim nearly dies of The Clench, a horrible strand of
ebola, Alfred tell Dick he’s dead. The ‘joke’ is revealed after 30 seconds, but
    STILL!
  • After the Joker seems to kill Tim, Dick goes wild with rage and kills Joker. Tim arrives and calms Dick down, while Bruce revives the Joker to alleve Dick’s guilt.
  • After nearly dying, Steph was convinced to take a year off
in Africa and rebuild her self confidence. Leslie Thompkins told everyone that
    she was dead.
  • Bruce got hit by Darkseid’s Omega Beams. He seems to die,
but was actually catapulted through time and turned into a living bomb? Tim
figures out he’s alive and helps fix the bomb situation.
  • After his heart stopped for a minute, Dick was brought back
by Earth 3 Lex Luthor. His secret identity revealed to the world, Bruce
convinced him to fake his death and go undercover with Spyral. (nu52)
  • Tim is seemingly reduced to dust by a bunch of satellite
things? He’s actually zapped up to a prison outside of the universe, I think? I
do not know, but everyone thought he was dead. (nu52)

That’s all I can think of right now. Might edit this when
I’m a bit more awake. There’s A Lot.

Fuck You Bluebeard You Don’t Know Me

whitejenna:

skellerbzzt:

There’s a story Grandpa used to tell by the fire about a Lady who was engaged to be married to a very rich man. He’d had many wives before, it was said, but they’d all vanished. This caused the Lady some concern, but her parents just saw his money and sent her off to be wed, and she being in the sort of predicament she was, resolved to find her own way through it.

So she moved into his house on a far-away island away from her family, with her solitary trunk, and look upon the wide expanse of the huge estate that stood, colossal and empty except for him and her and their silent gray-faced servants. The man she married was huge and had a long black beard take devoured most of he face, and beady, dark eyes that burned in his wide, dark sockets.

No one knew how he’d come upon his fortune, but he had many ships and was often away, and he said he was just as happy to leave her be, that his main interest was in travel, but he needed someone to tend to his home. The grey-faced servants moved her one solitary trunk into her cavernous bedroom and he bent before the bed and kissed her small hand and he kissed her small foot and told her she could have anything she wanted in all the world if she would simply agree to stay here.

“You may go into any room in the house, have anything it is that you wish to have, build anything my fortune can build you, and do whatever you wish with my fortune to please you. You may move what you wish moved, and all I ask in return is that you do not use this key. All I wish is that you do go into the room at the bottom of the tower, at the end of the hall, it is my private sanctuary and it is all I love besides travel. This is all I ask of you,” he said, and his eyes gleamed too hot and he held her small hand in his large paw and stared too closely at her.

“Promise me this and you may do what you wish with all I otherwise possess.”

“I do promise,” she said. He kissed her small foot and he kissed her small hand and the very next day sailed out into the world, waving goodbye and leaving her all alone in the wide, empty house with only grey-faced servant silently stepping around her and saying no words.

She promptly removed it from the ring and threw the heavy too-cold key into the ocean. She reviewed her husband’s books and accounts and began to neaten the household, paying the servants more and renovating their quarters until they were friendly and bright eyed and she opened up the extra, cavernously echoing chambers of the house to their families so the hallways rang with voices.

She balanced her husband’s financial empire, sending missives and inquires to various branches, and by the time he returned from his travels he looked bewildered that she was still there and all she had done, but conceded that she had followed the letter of their agreement.

“But what was the room then, Grandpa?”

“Who cares? If somebody tries to lead you into a trap, don’t follow them, and if you promise not do something, then don’t do it,” Grandpa had said, offering me a perfectly toasted marshmallow.

I’m in love with your tags about Logan and Trans!Laura, just,,,, so you know I appreciate your tag stories!!!!!

I would absolutely love it if you wrote some trans Laura content tbh. Even just your tag essay made me feel some kind of emotions

The original tag essay is here, and I’m operating in a functional AU of this thing I wrote one time, but that doesn’t matter unless you want the deleted scene of Laura trying to take Logan’s head off.

X-23 is one of thirteen…brothers, for lack of a better word.  The lab staff call them brothers, a little tongue-in-cheek, and X-23 learns to hate the word, learns the taste of being called brother like the taste of blood, learns it as thing and copy and weapon.  All of them do, but X-23 hates it the most.

X-23′s brothers die one at a time–some of natural causes.  There were ten of them who never made it out of the ex vitro tanks, and X-14 dies at a year, X-11 at nineteen months, X-19 at three years, X-17 at five.  X-13 falls during training and the three broken ribs ‘heal’ straight into lung tissue, and the doctors usher the rest of them away.  X-13 never comes back from the medical bay, and neither do X-15, X-12, or X-22–broken leg, crushed hand, and cracked skull, in order.  Healed to death.

When X-23 comes looking for X-22, there’s a doctor sitting alone in an office with her hands clutched so tight the knuckles are bleached.  X-23 has always been a wanderer, more than the other brothers, and given to getting into trouble, often punished and all the more furious for it.

The doctor looks up when the door opens and scrubs the back of one hand over her face.

“Where’s X-22,” X-23 says flatly, and the doctor comes over to crouch down, on eye level.  X-23 is short.  They’re all short.

“I’m really sorry,” the doctor says, and she sounds sincere, her eyes red and her scent washed with something X-23 doesn’t recognize.  “He–he died, Veintitres.  We did everything we could to save him.”

If it was any other doctor, X-23 would snarl and storm off, retreat to the others.  They’re never reprimanded for their tempers, only for disobedience.

This doctor, though.  This is the nicest doctor.  She never wears anything that makes them sneeze, and she brings chocolates when they have to get blood drawn, and she never told a soul when X-23 carefully removed one of her earrings, a plain silver hoop on X-23′s palm.  X-23 gave it back, but–

“Pretty,” X-23 says dully, reaching out to touch one of the hoops.  “He liked them too.”

The doctor’s eyes spill over and that smell pours off her skin as she carefully–very carefully, there are limits even for the nicest doctor–wraps one arm around X-23.

“Come on.  Let’s take you back to your brothers.”

There are five of them who make it to ten years old–X-16, X-18, X-20, X-21, and X-23.

There is one of them who makes it to ten years and one day.

Logan (x-men) and 1, 5, or 9 from the Stabby Starters. I can’t decide. :X also feel better!

words-writ-in-starlight:

5: You’re the one with a blade at my throat, so you’re obviously upset.

For this ask meme!  Also, will probably make more sense knowing that I wrote this!  Some general dialogue shamelessly borrowed from X-Men Evolution.

So the girl’s good.

Logan’s an adult.  He can admit that much.  She’s small, even by his standards, and–wiggly, and she dropped out of a tree with a shriek like a mountain lion right on top of him, a blade at his throat before he could do more than grab the nearest available limb.

“Hey, now,” Logan says.  One hand is clamped tight around her ankle–probably tight enough to hurt, although she seems unbothered–and the other is drawn back, clenched into a fist.  His claws are sheathed, though, and he’d like them to stay that way.  She’s too small to be an adult–he works with a lot of kids, and he’s guessing fourteen.  Maybe fifteen, at the outside.  He’s not in a rush to play slice-n-dice with someone younger than Kitty.  Besides, his mouth will taste like blood for a week if she really does slit his throat.  “What do you want?”

“You’re Weapon X,” she hisses.

The snarl that rips itself out of his throat is involuntary and sounds inhuman, his lips pulling back thoughtlessly as rage threatens to roll over him like a storm front.  “I am not.”

“You are.”  Her grip tightens, one hand tangled in the longest part of his hair to expose his jugular.  It’s not a great way to cut a throat without an extremely sharp blade, the important arteries hidden under layers of taut tissue, but his skin parts like wet paper under her weapon, sending blood in a steady trickle down his chest.  If it was Logan, he could go through all that protective tissue in a heartbeat.  He’s sure this girl can do the same.

She’s shaking, he realizes, as if she’s holding back her own storm front by a hair.  Every muscle is trembling, although her blade is steady.  A breath through his nose says blood-rage-fear to his brain, layered over a scent that just doesn’t seem to register right.  Everyone has their own distinct smell, except for this girl, who seems–off.

Christ, but this would be a great moment for Charles, or even Jean, to sense this scuffle and intervene.  Logan isn’t really a good candidate for whatever this is.  He’s too much of a linear thinker–A leads to B, where A is a problem and B is violence.

He takes a deep breath, as best he can without pushing the blade deeper into his throat, and tries to sound like he’s in control when he says, “How about we talk about this like people?”

“I’m not people.”

Well, okay then.  That’s a starting point, at least.  “Fair enough.  Me neither, ‘cording to some.  You want to tell me why you’re upset, at least?”  A profoundly terrible thought occurs to him.  “Listen, kid, if I did something to someone–”

“I’m not upset!”  Her voice is high and thin and ragged, like something feral, like she’s barely forming words rather than just screaming until there’s blood on her teeth.  Like he used to be, right after he stumbled out of the lab.

“I mean, you’re the one with the blade at my throat,” Logan says evenly.  “So you’re obviously upset about something.”

She flips over his shoulders, lands crouched on the ground in front of him, and–  Listen.

He can’t quite find it in himself to blame her for cutting his throat on the way down.

Unpopular Opinion™

androbeaurepaire:

I will never not be astonished by people actually thinking Batman SHOULD become a murderer and kill the Joker.

I will never not be astonished by people actually thinking murder should be the ultimate way for a man who is perfectly aware of how mentally unstable he is, who is perfectly aware of how his sanity DEPENDS of his iron-clad moral code, to show parental love to his equally traumatized son -who is an unapologetic killer himself (and as much as I love Jason, last time I checked, killing people was fucking problematic, duh).

I will never not be astonished by people actually thinking love equates butchering who you fundamentally are, in the most soul-destroying way, for the sake of someone else.

Don’t get me wrong, the depth of the conflict between Bruce and Jason about killing criminals (and the Joker in particular) is immensely interesting and make for endless amazing discussions. It is, because on top of the ethical question, it creates emotional conflict and therefore a good story. But said conflict and story are only good because of who the characters are, because of how their history shaped them to develop certain convictions and to make certain choices.

Wanting Bruce to solve the years of grief and trauma and emotional hell between him and Jason by erasing his own mental history, by erasing everything he went through, everything he overcame in order to not loose himself, is not only incredibly harmful(1), but it would also end the story in a very, very unsatisfaying way, for everyone. You don’t solve a conflict for the better by completely destroying a character for the sake of another. You do it by making them both grow through finding a way to meet in the middle.

I get having a fave and siding with him. Believe me, I do. Nobody is never 100% objective when it comes to characters and stories we’re deeply attached to and we all have our opinions and biaises. Hell, everything I just wrote is deeply influenced by my own feelings and opinions about Bruce/Batman. But stories like that work because of who the characters are and how they feel about each others precisely because of that.

And wanting Bruce to become an entirely different character so his love for Jason (and Jason’s for him, for who he is) can be acknowledged and validated would not save their relationship.

It would kill it, because they wouldn’t be Bruce and Jason anymore.

(1) And I will point you to Batman v. Superman if you want to see HOW ACTUALLY FULL OF LOVE AND HEROISM (HA) BATMAN BECOMES WHEN HE DECIDES TO KILL “A FREAK DRESSED AS A CLOWN” HE DEEMS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATH OF HIS LOVED ONES. Duh-bis.

Did you know how is the personality/code of ethics of Deathstroke in the comics bu Marv Wolfman?

(Tales of Teen Titans #55)

I just reblogged [this post] for you, but I’ll do my best to expand here. Slade has one of the most complicated moral codes in DC Universe IMO, particularly when he’s written by Wolfman because I feel like later comics simply generalized Slade into a straight up villain.

In the above panel, Gar says, “That’s insane! You could have died doing something you didn’t even believe in.” Slade took up a contract to kill the Titans after his son died failing to complete this mission for the HIVE. Slade didn’t have any real motivation to go after the Titans other than operating under this idea that he was helping to lay his son’s memory to rest– as corrupt as that memory was. I feel like this ties directly into the fact that Slade Wilson is a military man. It’s expected for soldiers to commit to a mission regardless of whether or not it’s in line with their own moral codes, and I think that’s something we’re seeing reflected here. Slade took up this cause as if it was a mission foisted upon him rather than because he was morally driven to eradicate the world of the Titans.

Slade actually seems to have a soft spot for the Titans and even carries mutual respect for them. I think that Slade’s moral code can first and foremost be described as honor bound, because as a mercenary, he lives up to a reputation of discretion and success. His son, Joey, lost his voice because Slade was honor bound to not give up details on his client.

image

(The Judas Contract)

“My word is my bond.”

Overall, Slade seems to exist very firmly in a morally grey spectrum. I think he has an utterly realistic outlook on life. He doesn’t seem to have any idealistic hopes that the future will be a better place; he just takes life as it’s given to him. Murder and death are a part of life; therefore, Slade will take contracts for money. He doesn’t see himself as a villain for doing this because he’s just participating in something that’s always been common in humankind’s history. The only thing that seems to carry worth to Slade is honor and commitment. If you say you’re going to do something, you better do it.

image

(Tales of Teen Titans #55)

“You called me a villain. Never thought of myself as that. I’m a mercenary. A soldier for hire. […] I don’t steal or kill for personal gain. I have a strict code of ethics.”

Because Slade is so firm on this quality, it makes it possible for him to occasionally team up with the Titans. Even if he’s working to his own agenda, he can generally be trusted to do what he says he’s going to do. Slade may live in this morally grey spectrum, but he’s upfront about it and doesn’t seem to seek out other people’s misery and destruction on his own. He’ll just do it if he gets paid for it, and it’s probably because he figures that if he doesn’t do it, someone else will. Therefore, he might as well be the one who cashes the paycheck.

Regarding Slade’s preoccupation with commitment, you mainly see this in regards to his family. Slade is loyal to Adeline, his ex-wife, despite all the animosity she harbors toward him. She tried to kill him and ended up shooting his eye out, and he doesn’t hold this against her. I think he views her actions as completely appropriate because she was acting on behalf of their son, and Slade regrets what happened to Joey. He thinks he deserves it. Slade’s commitment to Grant is seen through the way he took up the contract against the Titans. Overall, he wants the best for his family, even if that means he needs to stay away from them.

image

(Tales of Teen Titans #55)

“No way. I haven’t been with Joseph since he was a kid. He’s straight… a good kid. His mother raised him well. Y’know, I still love her and I think she loves me… but we’re committed to different goals. But she raised Joe good. […] Joe was worried when Addie was kidnapped. He’s absolutely clean. And I’m damn proud of him.”

Despite Slade’s life as a mercenary, he’s first and foremost a family man, which is a very paradoxical quality. Slade keeps his distance from his family because he realizes that his proximity has a tendency to make their lives worse. Slade can be pretty self-destructive with the life choices that he makes. Even when people have entirely different moral codes as him, Slade seems to easily respect it and stay in his own lane. He’s definitely a complicated guy.

justiceleaque:

i always found it interesting how up until jason’s death, the artists drew him as a kid. clearly a kid, his physique was rounder and stubbier and more child-like, but when death in the family hit, he almost resembled a young adult. and i get that showing a 14-year-old be beaten to death and blown up and then be carried by batman isn’t “nice” or “proper” or “respectful” but calling a child’s death to a vote wasn’t nice either yet they went for it

For anyone who didn’t think the difference was noticeable – or who didn’t want to go trawling through old comics – let’s have some side by side. The left image is Batman 408, which is immediately after Jason’s revamped origin story. Another issue later puts Jason’s age at 12, and boy does he look it. His face is tiny and his cheeks are squishably round.

Middle picture is from Batman 425. Which is immediately before DitF. His cheeks aren’t quite as squishable, but his face is still round. Just one solid curve going from his mask to his jawline, and then up to his ear.

The picture on the right is from the first issue of DitF, Batman 426, and holy jawline Batman. Not only is his jaw a lot more square here, his face looks longer and thinner, and he has very defined cheekbones.

Here’s a side by side of Bruce and Jason from the same issue.

Wow, they look the same age. Weird, considering Bruce is at least 15 years older than Jason. Literally the only difference is Bruce’s face is a bit thinner.

On the topic of humans being everyone’s favorite Intergalactic versions  of Gonzo the Great:
Come on you guys, I’ve seen all the hilarious additions to my “humans are the friendly ones” post. We’re basically Steve Irwin meets Gonzo from the Muppets at this point. I love it.

But what if certain species of aliens have Rules for dealing with humans?

  • Don’t eat their food. If human food passes your lips/beak/membrane/other way of ingesting nutrients, you will never be satisfied with your ration bars again.
  • Don’t tell them your name. Humans can find you again once they know your name and this can be either life-saving or the absolute worst thing that could happen to you, depending on whether or not they favor you. Better to be on the safe side.
  • Winning a human’s favor will ensure that a great deal of luck is on your side, but if you anger them, they are wholly capable of wiping out everything you ever cared about. Do not anger them.
  • If you must anger them, carry a cage of X’arvizian bloodflies with you, for they resemble Earth mo-skee-toes and the human will avoid them.
    • This does not always work. Have a last will and testament ready.
  • Do not let them take you anywhere on your planet that you cannot fly a ship from. Beings who are spirited away to the human kingdom of Aria Fiv-Ti Won rarely return, and those that do are never quite the same.

Basically, humans are like the Fair Folk to some aliens and half of them are scared to death and the others are like alien teenagers who are like “I dare you to ask a human to take you to Earth”.

We knew about the planet called Earth for centuries before we made contact with its indigenous species, of course. We spent decades studying them from afar.

The first researchers had to fight for years to even get a grant, of course. They kept getting laughed out of the halls. A T-Class Death World that had not only produced sapient life, but a Stage Two civilization? It was a joke, obviously. It had to be a joke.

And then it wasn’t. And we all stopped laughing. Instead, we got very, very nervous.
