ASK CHRIS #330: BATMAN V SUPERMAN V WORLD-BUILDING

Q: Given the premise of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the studio’s intent to launch Justice League from it, was the movie doomed from the start?@CrookedKnight

A: If you’re a longtime ComicsAlliance reader, you might recall that I had very little interest in seeing Batman v Superman, to the point of once stating publicly that the only way you could get me into a theater for that thing would be to give me $750 — give hundo to see it, two to talk about it after, and then fifty for snacks. A few weeks ago, though, I actually sat down to watch that thing in all its questionable “Ultimate Edition” glory when a podcast with the amazing title of The People v Batman v Superman made a donation to a charity of my choice in order to get me on board.

If you don’t have time to listen to the whole thing right now, then just close your eyes and imagine 105 straight minutes of irate screaming. You’ve pretty much got it.

I listened to this podcast. It is, indeed, almost two hours of Chris ranting while the hosts bemusedly listen.

I believe everything should be taught be passionate and biased teachers, so I had a good time.

relatedly, my all-time favourite translation note concerning a single word

Yo,

Thanks to my Old English professor, I firmly believe “so” is the best translation AND I still occasionally yell “hwaet!” to get attention.

Thanks to the wonderful people I follow, I have seen this post twice now and BOTH TIMES assumed that someone had translated ‘In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida’ into Old English. ‘Gār-Dena  in gēar-dagum’ looks close enough to my hazy recollection of that song’s lyrics that it wasn’t … ridiculous … …

Well, it was the sort of ridiculous that I expect and look forward to from Tumblr, anyways.

… this was also good

The second image is actually Big Barda, who needs to be properly named because she is AWESOME.

Lady is from Apokolips, raised to be evil, but rebelled once she discovered there could be something better. Escaped to Earth with her husband Mr. Miracle and is mostly a housewife while her husband works as an escape artist.

Unless heroes need help, at which point she dons her heavy duty battle armor and he kisses her goodbye so she can go off to war.

She is great and they are great and jokes about her mighty boom stick are great.

(that image is from Birds of Prey v1 104? I think? Around there anyways. REALLY great arc)

Note: In the comics, Max is a white man who gets his super speed from Native Americans and that part of his backstory has mighty whitey written all over it, so I wanted to cast a Native American/First Nations actor to subvert those implications. In this continuity, his backstory remains largely the same, but Max confronts racism, diaspora issues, and cultural reconnection through his studies.

I’m curious– What style of clothing would y’all wear if public ridicule, financial limitations, and general inconvenience weren’t a thing?

I’d wear ball gowns; I’m talking about big, flowy, fluffy chiffon and taffeta 1980s prom night sequined nightmares. Catch me buying Hot Pockets at the Wal*Mart looking like Jennifer Connelly’s hallucination in Labyrinth.

Put your answer in the tags!!

Okay, SOMEBODY who follows me must love Attack on Titan and Star Wars.

I need this person, or people, to go read all of Ryssa’s Attack on Titan fanfic and tell me all about them. Or tell me about other people who already gush about her.

Right now I am filled with adoration for Ryssa, and a terrible jealously towards all the people who can read her recent fic. I can’t like that dumb anime, because I saw a few gifs of the titans and they were very squicky. And the association is too strong, now. But Ryssa writes MAGIC.

She wrote Batkid magic. She wrote Young Avengers magic. She wrote Les Mis magic.

Obviously her recent stories are magic, as well. I wish to enjoy them vicariously through someone else. Hook me up, people.

Coconuts have only been in the Caribbean for 500 years. They just….floated on over from Asia and took root. That’s…hilarious.

Wait really? I always thought they were if not native at least brought over on purpose

Right??? I’m watching this nature doc and when the narrator said that I nearly spit my drink giggling. They’re remarkably buoyant and just bob their way to a new shore. So carefree. Truly a fruit destined to be in the Caribbean.

are you suggesting coconuts migrate
