Batfamily Fanfic Retrospective!

Update: Some edits to hopefully make things clearer?

I’m trying to put together a history of characterization in
Batfandom fic.

I’m hoping to identify distinct eras in fanfic and end up
with multiple example fic for each era. To accomplish this, I’m going to need
help.

Do you remember a fanfic that really seemed to showcase what
good fanfic was like a certain point?

  • Something where Dick is trying to balance being a good
brother to Tim and a good brother to Damian, written while Red Robin was still
coming out, that seems to really represent what things were like back then?
  • Something about Dick’s relationship to Jason, written before
Jason’s resurrection, that just couldn’t be written these days?
  • Some Steph and Tim lighthearted banter written when it
seemed like they would last forever?
  • Or Tim and Kon stuff where they didn’t villainize Steph and
    it fills you with nostalgia?
  • A story where Tim is resurrected by a future Damian after becoming Joker Jr and dying? And then tries to adapt to the future while being selectively mute? (Yes, Green Knight, I love you.)
  • (These are just examples, not specific things I’m looking for)

Send me a link and description through my ask or submit!
Maybe even through email (kiragecko at gmail) if you don’t trust Tumblr at all.

Also, reblog. I’d love to get this outside of my tiny
circle.

Guidelines:

Content: no fics with graphic gore, horror, or terribly
depressing endings (loads and loads of angst are fine). If any kids/teens die, PLEASE tell me. You could also spoiler the heck out of any Joker
appearances, but it’s not obligatory. (I do read extremely dark stuff, but only very specific things, and we’re not getting into that here.)

General Shipping Info: I’m aromantic-asexual. I’m fine with
shippy fic, but usually find it boring. Especially if it’s big on the fluffy
romance. Send in all the ship fic you want, but it might help if you include why you liked it, because I’ve got no clue. Actually, if anyone wants to help with
that, and thinks they can be reasonably objective about ships that aren’t theirs,
I’d appreciate it.

Specific Shipping Rules: I’m not going to judge ships. If
you think some shippers are evil for their preferences, please just quietly
ignore this project. However, this is my thing, and I can’t read Dick/Damian,
Dick/Tim, Any Robin/Damian, Bruce/Robin, or Superman/Robin. Specifically, if
you send me any Dick/Tim or Dick/Damian I’ll have to block you because it makes
me have intrusive thoughts about sex with my younger siblings and is just – not
good for me. (I have read all of the above, if it had something else I wanted, but lets not for this project.)

Era: I’m accepting any time period it was written. Pre-2010
is very valuable, and pre-2000 would be an amazing treasure. Modern is also
good, because I’m still stuck in 2013. Finally, 2013, because THEN I GET TO
READ FIC FROM MY FAVOURITE PERIOD.

Format

I’m not picky, but I’d love:

  • a way to find it
  • the authour
  • when it was written/posted
  • a quick summary (‘Batkids bonding over missing teeth,’ ’5 JayTim
    arguments’, etc)
  • warnings for the triggers I mentioned
  • why the shippy stuff is
good if there is shippy stuff

DAMIAN IS HERE

THIS IS THE MOST IN CHARACTER DAMIAN I HAVE EVER SEEN😍😍

[DC Superhero Girls short, featuring Batgirl (Babs) and Robin (Damian).

Batgirl is forced to babysit Damian instead of helping the other Superhero Girls fight Shadow-beings. She resents this, and Damian feels rejected. After Damian is kidnapped by the beings, she realizes how important he is to her. Damian rescues himself, while explaining to the Shadow-Beings why they are doing a sub-par job at villainy. At the end, Babs apologizes, and Damian accepts her apology as imperiously and secretly gratefully as you expect him to.

End ID.]

Persons of lesser feudalistic stature and otherwise: did you know we have a Kickstarter campaign to print volumes 1 and 2 of The Stoop-Gallants? It’s true. And what’s even more impressive than taking on a dragon in the classic formation without a third man? Pledging to it!

When your life is duller than the quest for laundry and cat sick, the only cure is more cowbell Stoop Gallants.

Dragons help too.

Oh, right! The nu52! I still live firmly in the past and forget the the reboot is something that people have to deal with when enjoying fandom. Sorry if I was insensitive (in the Cass post). I engaged with the Batfandom through Cass, Tim, Dick, and Babs. Cass and Tim are different characters with different pasts now. Dick has been a shallow echo of himself in all the posts I’ve seen. And Babs lost most of what drew me to her. I’m not complaining, the reboot just doesn’t seem REAL. It’s fandom.

You are very not wrong, but yeah, it’s been bumming me out pretty hard anyway, because it’s having steadily more impact on the fandom I engage with. Rebirth is better than Nu52, but that just means fewer people hate it and I’m losing company in the denial zone.

Tim’s gotten particularly hard for me to write lately, because his fandom incarnation had already been getting weirder for years but now that he’s been pithed and shelved he’s just. Hanging around in fan representations of the family as a sort of embarrassing ghost of himself that a lot of people urgently need to pretend never existed or was never worth anything, because Damian was horrible to him and they love Damian, and don’t want to deal with the fact that his hilariously bumptious behavior can have, like, actual consequences for others. :/

Kind of what happened to Jason thirty years ago, really, only without the memorialized-as-tragedy element and for the benefit of a Replacement who despises instead of idolizes him. It’s been making Batman fic hard for me.

…whiiiiich would be why I skived off and wrote so much FFVII in the past year, lol.

Lately, I’ve been wanting to do a retrospective on the Batfandom.

I’d love to list fic from different eras of fandom, ideally going back to the 70s, but even early 2000s would be enough. Fic that really capture the characterization from that era.

I have a few fic from the early part of the 21st century, but the author – uh – has a unique voice, shall we say? I’m not sure it would be representative.

There’s things from throughout my fandom experience that I’ve REALLY liked. And as they were lost, new things showed up. I’d love to be able to compare when I’m feeling fatalistic – to remind myself that even if fandom no longer caters to me, it’s still full of beautiful things.

(And that Dick/Tim brotherly bonding fic from the late 90s is still objectively the height of the written word.)

That sounds wonderful, if you ever wanted to pursue it I thiiink I can help with some early stuff? *fingers crossed*

Please!

If I get an idea of what other people have access to, I’ll be able to see if it’s feasible!

Accessibility and Convenience Are not the Same Thing

urbancripple:

A quick note to all my (amazing) able-bodied allies: be careful when talking about the “curb cut effect” in relation to how accessibility affects people. When you mention “prams, buggies, and bicycles” in the same breath as people with mobility aids, you’re conflating “accessibility” with “convenience”.

When disabled people talk about accessibility, we’re talking about “equal access” not “ease of access”. When something isn’t accessible, we’re not mildly inconvenienced; we’re completely excluded. When the lift isn’t working, we can’t get to work. When public transportation isn’t accessible, we’re not troubled; we’re trapped.

This is why our most vocal supporters call themselves “disability rights activists” not “accessibility advocates”. It’s not about the benefits of accessibility; it’s about the direct, long-term harm a lack of accessibility causes.

Most folks don’t realize that the ADA is not a building code, but is in fact a civil rights law. So, the next time you’re explaining how important accessibility is to your able-bodied friends, don’t just focus on how accessibility makes the most common spaces better for everyone.

Focus on how a lack of accessibility excludes disabled people from even the most common spaces.
