For centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire, everyone was still writing in Latin. It was the language used by scholars, monks, and government officials and since they were the main ones writing, most of what has come down from about 400 CE to about 700 CE is in Latin. Which means our first known literature in many languages was only written down centuries after those languages started being spoken, when it became fashionable to write in the local languages again.
Title Credit: Dreamworks’ The Road to El Dorado. The motto of Alexander Dumas’ The Three Musketeers also gets a nod.
Prompt: Written for kiragecko – “Tim hiding with the (preboot, who cares about canon?) Titans because he can’t deal with his Damian-is-back emotions?”
Author’s Note: It’s all preboot except for Batman, Inc. It’s also freakishly long. I’m blaming the Lady Gecko for that one and also the complete lack of Tim and Damian.
Omg. This ran away from me so hard and fast. So rather than have Tim go off on a random whim, this popped out as time-travel fic instead. Hope you enjoy!

He woke up in the future. Y’know. Like ya do.
Except that it was not the future as in “the next morning”, no. He woke up in one of the guest beds of Wayne Manor–except it did not look guest-ish–and one look in the mirror told him that it was gonna be one of THOSE days. A day with Young Justice levels of crazy except it was going to apparently be in Gotham. Because the face in the mirror was NOT sixteen. He wasn’t sure what it was, but it wasn’t that.
“I am a professional,” he assured his bleary-eyed self in the bathroom mirror, “I am going to do right by my future self and get through his day like it’s any other day and then I’m going to go to sleep and have Bruce work things out with Zatanna or whatever.”
(Tim had been on a space mission with his team before this happened, and it had wiped him out. He didn’t have the energy to really freak out after something like this. And Tim was a professional, so he refused to freak out anyway.)
most of the metric system is great and all but honestly fuck celsius
lemme explain smthn: farenheit is human-centered.
in celsius, you have to use the dumb fucking scale of “0 = ???, 40 = hot as shit” like damn that’s some exponential curve stuff
but with farenheit it’s simple af. 0 is v cold. 100 is v hot. the end.
celsius makes sense for water, but am i water? no, im human.
stop being smug for using a shit temperature system.
[Image shows a man and the text, “why are you booing me? I’m right.”]
Live in the North. You soon learns that the most important metric is “Am I/and the water around me freezing” vs. ”Are we not freezing”.
0C is the most logical number ever for measurement. The ground turns to black ice. Your nose starts forming crystals. Things start becoming cold.
And guess what! Your fancy system is ALSO based on water freezing! 0F is when water that’s 50% salt freezes! And the whole thing is still defined by water freezing and boiling – they’re just at dumb, non-intuitive numbers!
-40C and 40C are when the outdoors get serious about murdering you. -40F to 100F doesn’t convey the same sense of meaning. The zero point is DUMB.
Just because you guys live in an area that rarely gets below 0F, doesn’t mean you should ignore the parts of the world that do. (Even if they are mostly uninhabited.)
[Description: three panels from a comic book, showing Nightwing and Batman’s faces. Text:
Nightwing: Thanks. I had a good teacher, except for the interpersonal skills and ability to work with others. That was me. [pause] One question… did you tell Faith that you were proud of me? When you first met?
Batman: Are you going to hug me again if I say “yes”?
Nightwing: No. I pushed it once in Atlantis. You didn’t raise no dummy.
Okay, everybody, I don’t talk much on here but this is important and I can’t find any other posts about it here.
