Turn Your Sound On !!!!

@she-who-treads-on-water

If I understand correctly, these are ceramic bowls floating in a pool of water, possibly in a cave because it’s echo-y, and the clinking sound is them bumping into one another. Like wind chimes, but … water chimes?

yo, i saw this in person over the summer! it’s an art installation!

the piece is called clinamen v.2, created by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot and included as a part of the Soundtracks exhibit in the moma – i saw it in san fran, and this photo is from a showing in new york:

image

the exhibit is a large shallow pool filled with white ceramic bowls in varying sizes. the bowls are pushed around the pool by a gentle current, and the sound created as they hit each other is somewhere between a wind chime and a haunted bell.

i sat there for a solid ten minutes just watching the bowls move around while listening to the sounds they made. it was absolutely hypnotic…

Soundtracks runs in the san fran moma until january 1st 2018, and i absolutely recommend going if you can. many of the exhibits play with sound in 3D spaces, and there are some truly wild contraptions on display.

I wish I could listen to the music they make for several minutes.

Edit: It’s only a little over a minute, but this youtube video of the installation makes me feel real peaceful so I’m sharing.

uggghhhh no time for fun why here is a batkids doodle before I go back to doing what I’m supposed to be doing

[Image shows the Batkids. From left to right: Cass, Dick, Jason, Damian, Tim, and Steph.

Dick has one hand on his hip and the other over Damian’s shoulder. Cass has a hand on Dicks arm and is peeking over it from behind him. Dick is glancing at her.

Jason is also behind Dick and is kind of smirking.

Damian has his arms crossed and is glaring at either Tim or Steph. Maybe both. Tim is holding a tablet, glaring back at Damian and has an angry bubble over his head. Steph is leaning on Tim’s shoulder and looking at the tablet.

How to praise writers and influence fics

kendralynora:

icybluepenguin:

I’ve seen a lot of posts recently reminding readers to leave feedback on fics, which is great!!  Writers deserve all the love they can get.  Likes, reblogs, comments, messages, these are the lifeblood of writers.  They are proof that people are reading, that they’re enjoying, and that they want more.

But maybe readers don’t know what to say.  Maybe you’re new to Tumblr, new to reading fan fiction, shy, or just not sure how to say what you want to say.

Let me start by saying, no matter how popular the blog or how cool you think they are, everyone loves a compliment.  If you’re worried about sounding silly or bothering people, let me assure you- a message will make your writer do a happy dance (depending on the writer, they may actually get up and dance.  I have.)

Here’s the basic ways of communicating with writers on Tumblr:

Likes and kudos- these are great, they’re the high-fives in this world.  They’re the “hey, nice” nod.
Reblogs- even better, because they mean exposure.  More people see the story and that makes us really happy.  A reblog with a comment is amazing, especially one that entices others to read.  These make a writer’s day.
Comments and messages- these are the thing that keeps us going.  Most of us have anon turned on- and if we don’t, just let us know you want a private reply.  (And, if your writer has anon off, it probably means they’ve been getting hate and deserve extra love.)
Recommendations- recs are like coming in to work to find someone baked your favorite cake and left it on your desk.  Recommendations make your writer feel so loved and valued!

So, that’s all good, but what do you actually SAY to writers?  It doesn’t have to be much or take a lot of time.

A simple “This is great/funny/hot!” is wonderful.  "Best fic I’ve read this week!“  "Funny as hell and cute too.”  "You have to read this, it’s awesome!“  "I can’t wait for more of this.”  "I hope you keep going!“  These are great in reblogs and in messages.

Even better is specific feedback.  We love specific feedback, because it tells us what readers liked and what they didn’t.  Want to influence our next fic?  Tell us what you liked about this one and I bet you it will keep showing up!  Specific feedback is just telling the writer what you liked.  It doesn’t have to be long or complicated, either.  (But if you write a lot, we will love you so much.)

Was there a character you liked?  Talk about them:  "I love how you wrote X” “Y was so funny!”  "OMG I wanted to STRANGLE Q!“  "You can really feel X’s frustration.”  "Y has so much depth, they’re a really well-rounded character.“  "R says so much with so few words, it’s amazing.”

What about a part or line you enjoyed?  "That bit in the park- LOVE IT.“  "I have never read a better description of a cup of tea.”  "The way you wrote about his fear, that was heartbreaking.“

Was there a part that made you feel something?  Happy, sad, angry?  "That last sentence killed me, he’s so broken.”  "I wanted to jump around when they finally kissed!“  "This chapter was so tense, my heart was pounding by the end.”

Did the characters or plot or setting remind you of your life?  "I live in Brussels, that’s just how that street looks.“  "When Y talked about R, I knew exactly how he felt.”  "You captured that lost, aimless feeling perfectly; I’ve so been there.“

Are there unanswered questions?  Mention how much you want the answers.  "I can’t wait to find out what’s in the basket!”  "That was a cliffhanger ending, wow.“  "How is she going to explain THAT?”  (some writers are touchy about  predicting, though, so stay away from “I bet he’ll throw that letter out.” or “X is clearly coming back.”)

A few closing notes: be enthusiastic if that’s your style, go crazy with exclamation marks, smileys, caps!  Tell a writer if you’re rereading their work- very little makes us happier than knowing our writing has the staying power for a second, third, sixth, tenth read.  Did a reread give you a new insight or feeling about the fic?  Tell us!  We will be so excited to hear.  And remember, recommendations are wonderful- putting up a random post tagging your favorite writers or fics you’re enjoying will show the writers that they’re writing is more than a flash in the opan and they’ll get some new readers too!

We can’t do this writing thing without you guys.  So thank you so much!  Without readers, we’re just talking to ourselves.  We love and appreciate you for reading- but we need to know you’re doing it.  We need feedback like we need air.  Don’t let your favorite writers suffocate! 🙂

we receive so few “special feedback” reviews that if you want to influence a fic you genuinely have a high chance of doing so if you leave a thoughtful comment just fyi

hc that Tim always pretends to be a complete useless damsel whenever the batfam saves him as a civilian. he just fucking dramatically falls into their arms

swanqueenfeathers:

As the son of Bruce Wayne, the richest and most influential man in Gotham, it pays to be prepared for anything. Unexpected interviews, invasive paparazzi, and of course, the occasional kidnapping for ransom. Tim can’t count how many times he and his siblings have been held at gunpoint by crooks– from the higher ups such as Two-Face, down to inexperienced newbies looking for what they hope’ll be some quick and easy cash. Frankly, it’s getting annoying at this point.

It takes effort on Tim’s part to stifle a bored yawn, despite the pistol that’s pressing into the side of his head. The rope around his wrists is cheap and loosely knotted; it wouldn’t take more that a second to slip it off and take care of the men surrounding him. They’re obviously new at this. But right now, he’s Tim Drake-Wayne. He’s supposed to be hapless and frightened as the crooks broadcast a video, threatening Tim with violence if they don’t receive a bajillion dollars from Bruce within the next two hours, blah blah blah.

It only takes about ten minutes before Robin shows up. Another two for him to incapacitate the men, tying them up nicely for the cops to pick up later.

“About time,” Tim sighs, letting the rope fall from his wrists and standing. He brushes imaginary dust from his suit, grimacing at the wrinkles garnered from the rough way the men had handled him.

“I was busy,” Damian says mildly. “Press is waiting outside. Who does this in the middle of the day?“

“Amatures,” Tim responds. He peers out the window, and sure enough there’s already a throng of people with cameras waiting for him to come out. Broadcasting a video for pretty much all of Gotham in order to get Bruce’s attention was like, top tier stupidity. Great. Now Tim had to put on a show. He casts a look at Damian and suddenly grins; might as well have fun with this.

The press is on them as soon as Robin kicks the door open, gritting his teeth as he supports most of Tim’s weight.

“Mr Drake! Mr Drake, were you terribly scared? Are you injured? Did they get the money?”

Tim fans himself dramatically, stumbling and forcing Robin to practially carry him. “Oh dear, it was horrible!” He cries, making sure to sound appropriately shaken. “Thank God, Robin was there to save me. I’m not sure what I would’ve done!”

“This is embarrassing,” Damian hisses, cheeks stained red.

“Mr Drake, as your father is Batman’s primary funder, do you know Robin personally?”

Tim splays a hand over his heart and shakes his head, mouth twisting into a forlorn smile. “I wish! It would be nice to have someone on call, considering how many times us Waynes find ourselves in these situations.”

A paramedic pushes her way through the crowd and asks Tim to come with her that she can provide a couple of check ups. Tim lets her take his arm, but not before he turns, clasping Robin’s hand in between his own, says, “I really can’t thank you enough-”

Damian glares from behind the mask. “Don’t-”

“You’re my hero, Robin,” Tim finishes, as he let’s the paramedic pull him towards the abulance waiting for them.

He gets a text from Bruce later, scolding him for the theatrics. There’s also a text from Jason, a jumble of letters that Tim translates as Jason’s inability to type properly due to laughter. Tim grins when he sees that Damian’s texted him, opening the message that contains nothing but the middle finger emoji. Tim’s thumbs fly over his screen as he shoots a quick response.

‘love u too lol pls dont kill me’

It’s annoying as hell seeing that factoid about Oxford University being older than the Aztec Empire and people being like whoooaaaa duuude like holy fuck that’s about as interesting as pointing out that Oxford is older than the Renaissance. And what’s even fucking worse is that there’s some post floating around on this website where someone mixed up the Aztecs with the Maya and misled a bunch of people into thinking that Oxford is older than Maya civilization!

  • The first Maya cities developed around 750 BCE, just around the time of the legendary founding of Rome.
  • Around 500 to 300 BCE, Maya society increased in complexity, with cities gaining monumental architecture and the first written records appearing. At the same time, Egypt was experiencing its last gasp as a politically independent civilization.
  • Around 250 CE, Maya culture was reaching new heights, with the complicated Long Count calendar in widespread use, far-flung trade routes developing, city-states engaging in alliances and rivalries, and an enormous artistic and architectural output being made, rather akin to Renaissance Italy. At the same time across the Atlantic, the influence of Christianity was increasing and the Roman Empire was in chaos.
  • Around 900 CE, the Classic Maya period came to a close, with cities being abandoned, dynasties being overthrown, and political organization collapsing, possibly caused by warfare and environmental factors. The Roman Empire was long gone in western Europe by now.
  • Oxford University was founded in 1096 CE. In Mesoamerica, the Toltecs flourished at their capital of Tollan.
  • The Mexica people entered the valley of Mexico around 1250 CE, two decades after the crowns of Castile and León were permanently united, and during the height of Gothic architecture in western Europe.
  • Tenochtitlan was founded by the Mexica in 1325 CE, a couple decades before the Black Death hit Europe.
  • The Aztec Empire did not begin until 1428 CE, around the same time the Inca Empire was founded, and just before Joan of Arc’s brief military career and subsequent capture and burning at the stake.
  • The Great Temple of Tenochtitlan was built in the middle of the 1400s CE, just as Brunelleschi was engineering the dome of the Cathedral of Florence and the Wars of the Roses were ravaging England.
  • Tlatoani (or emperor) Moctezuma II conducted his successful military campaigns in the first two decades of the 1500s, just as Pope Julius II undertook campaigns in central Italy and commissioned the rebuilding of St. Peter’s and the Sistine Chapel.
  • Martin Luther began what became the Reformation in 1517, just three years before the fall of the Aztec Empire to a coalition of Mesoamerican subject peoples and a small contingent of Spanish troops.

@kiragecko It’s the whole IPA, 2015 edition, consonants, vowels, and “extra symbols” in a pseudo-random arrangement for aesthetic effect, tiled about 4.5 times in each direction. No diacritics, accent marks, tone marks, or superscripted symbols, but all the main IPA symbols are there! The material is a light synthetic, I’m not sure what people think about it who care about texture a lot. If you have any other questions feel free to let us know!

Thank you so much!
This is going on my christmas list for sure!

Personal Note. (Due to this not being appropriate for my Tiny blog)

ask-ooc-tiny-anton:

Please note this is a very personal entry, as this is something I deal with every day of my life. Also: I would have put it on my PERSONAL account, not my OOC account, but I don’t have many followers on my personal..

People with FASD have an invisible, brain based physical disability with behavioural symptoms. They also have the same hopes, dreams and needs as everyone else. Living successfully with FASD means recognizing strengths and what each person brings to the Community. It’s about focusing on ABILITY rather than DISABILITY.

Each person with FASD is uniquely affected. Each individual experiences the effect of the brain damage in different ways on different days, depending on other stressors, and levels of fatigue.

Quality of Life concerns: Safety, recreation, employment and stable relationships and friendships.

Now for my more personal note.

I deal with FASD every single day of my life. I know what I need to work on, and I’m trying to. Here’s a few things that I’ve noticed about myself.
-I can turn things around and make it about me without even thinking about it. At times, people will come to me for support, or asking for advice, and I foolishly make it about me, and because of this, I have lost a good friend that I’ve known for 12 years recently because I can’t seem to learn from my mistakes and get my priorities straight.

-When it comes to eating, or doing anything, I need to be told to do it because I don’t think about it, even if my stomach is growling, it will not click in my mind that I need to eat. I do shower every day, but sometimes I forget to brush my teeth.

-I can be/am very selfish. This is a classical sign of FASD. Again, I will make it about me. I don’t mean to, it just happens.

-I am constantly on a low-level of depression, due to not working, and not having any stable relationships away from the computer. This has made me very withdrawn and a lot of the time I just don’t want to talk, but I do anyway, because the few real life friends that I DO have are precious to me and losing them makes me feel like I’m the type of person that people just don’t want to be around.

-Although my wording is excellent here on the computer, I’m not very talkative or cheerful in real life. When I talk, it’s like an interruption happens mid-way from my brain to my mouth. Things can make sense in my mind, but they come out differently when I try to say it. (Which can be very frustrating because I can’t get my point across).

-When it comes to trying to help people, the few that still do open up to me, a lot of the time I don’t know what to say because I personally have no idea what to think about it. Whether this be to a lack of complete understanding, or something else, I’m still trying to figure it out.

-I can be very childish, or very mature, depending on the situation. Most of the time it’s a 50/50 chance.

-If I seem in a bad mood, it’s probably because I am, because something in my environment has drastically changed and I’m having trouble dealing with it.

-Time passes by in a fluid motion for me, I can go through 4 hours, thinking it’s only been 1 or 2. I cannot do more than 2 things at once and multitasking seems damn near impossible for me.(Which a lot of the time it is.)

-I get frustrated easily, and anxiety can easily set in if I’m overwhelmed. I don’t have panic attacks, but I get very defensive and tend to snap and snarl.

…That’s it for today. If you guys want, I can post up a little bit like this every day so you can start to better understand who I am..and what I deal 24/7.

Lingthusiasm merch! IPA scarves, descriptivist t-shirts, and Lingthusiasm logo stickers

Lingthusiasm the podcast transforms your boring commute or chores into a lively, nerdy conversation, and by popular demand, you can now wear your linguistics fandom on your sleeve, around your neck, and surrounding your coffee or books!

Lingthusiasm merch on RedBubble

We’ve decided to use RedBubble for a couple of reasons. They ship to a broad range of countries for a reasonable price, which was very important us as an Australian and a Canadian who are used to getting dinged on shipping, and since we know we have listeners all over the world. We’re also excited about the scarves and the zippered pouches to put your pens and cables in, which are a cool addition to your typical t-shirts and mugs (but don’t worry, we still have t-shirts and mugs if you like them!). Lingthusiasm merch also helps us keep the show running and makes a great gift for the linguistics enthusiast in your life.

We have three designs, available in various colours and on various items:

IPA Scarves

Stylish enough to wear to conferences, subtle enough to wear
to the grocery store, and sure to amaze and delight your colleagues
when they realize this isn’t your typical alphabet motif, this IPA scarf
wraps you in a soft, vibrant hug of stealth nerdery.

Hang out with all
your favourite characters from the International Phonetic Alphabet (2015
edition) in white text on a navy blue, red, or olive background.
Symbols are arranged artistically, rather than by meaning, so it’s safe
to wear in an exam room. But if you can come up with any inadvertent
natural classes no one else has spotted yet, let us know and we’ll send
you a sticker!

This semi-translucent scarf doubles as simply a large square of
fabric, and can be repurposed as a nerdy patterned wall hanging,
curtain, or tablecloth for your office. Or cut it up and resew it into
whatever your imagination desires! (Pocket squares?)

Not judging your grammar, just analysing it

Some
things, you explain so often, that you might as well just carry them
around. Now you can! Push back against language peevery, promote the idea that language can be analyzed scientifically, and amuse the heck out of your fellow linguists.

Available as a mug, tote bag, zippered pouch, two notebooks, and on various colours of t-shirt (classic, fitted, and relaxed cuts).

Lingthusiasm Logo

Bring your podcast listening off your phone and into the world, show off
your Lingthusiasm support, and spot other Lingthusiasm listeners in the
wild with these Lingthusiasm logo items

Available in Lingthusiasm bright green on white, as two stickers, mug, tote bag, zippered pouch, notebook, and t-shirt (classicfitted, and relaxed cuts).

Want a colour or item we don’t have?

We’re also introducing a new Patreon perk for all patrons! If you like the looks of something in the store but want it in a different colour or on a different object, we’ll make a custom version for you at no extra charge! Want a scarf in purple instead of navy, red, or olive? Want the NOT JUDGING text on a tank top instead of a t-shirt? Now you can! (Subject to what’s possible on Redbubble.) More details on the Lingthusiasm Patreon: www.patreon.com/lingthusiasm

We’re already enjoying our own soft scarves and shiny stickers (had to test ‘em out, naturally!) and we’re so excited to see your photos and hear your stories about how you’re bringing Lingthusiasm items into your life!

Check out the Lingthusiasm merch shop on RedBubble.

I am really excited about both the IPA scarves and the NOT JUDGING YOUR GRAMMAR, JUST ANALYSING IT items.

First of all, there’s a lot of grammar snob, prescriptivist merch out there and not much for the other side. Why should “I’m silently judging your grammar” or “there, they’re, their” still be the main things that come up when you search for linguistics tshirts and mugs? Linguists don’t believe this! We need to make descriptivism cool and fashionable instead!

Second of all, while clever linguistics tshirts are great, I don’t really wear tshirts with writing on them at conferences and other formal situations. But conferences have a peak density of linguists to admire your clever linguistics clothing! What’s a dressed-up-nerd supposed to do?

A few months ago, I discovered customizable scarves, and I began to dream. What if…I put IPA symbols on it, small enough that you could wear it to the grocery store, but totally amazing for people who get it?

Originally, I was just going to make myself a scarf. But then I mentioned it to Lauren, and she wanted one. Maybe even two, in different colours, to match your conference-wear on both days. We figured, well, if we were both so excited about getting to wear IPA scarves, then maybe other people would be too, especially since the ALS and LSA meetings are both coming up.

Turns out scarves have great features as merch items! They’re sublimation printed, which means they’re really soft and have no textured layer of silkscreen. They’re also one size fits all, and light/unbreakable (i.e. easy to ship!).

We’re really excited to share the NOT JUDGING YOUR GRAMMAR, JUST ANALYSING IT items and the IPA scarves with you, give you another way to support the show, and help your non-linguist friends and relatives with better gift ideas for you. Please do tag @lingthusiasm if you have any pictures or stories to share about wearing, sharing, or creatively repurposing the merch!

@lingthusiasm How many IPA symbols are on the scarf?

The images don’t allow me to look close enough to figure it out. Is the whole main IPA chart? Just the prettiest symbols?

Because of how my brain works, I’d be spending a lot of time stimming by finding and touching all the symbols. If any major ones are missing, it would drive me CRAZY and the scarf is probably not a good fit for me.

Would you be willing to give me a bit more detail about what’s on the scarf?
